About Flurazepam

Benzodiazepine derivative, Sedative-hypnotic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, skeletal muscle relaxant.

Mechanism of Action of Flurazepam

Flurazepam mainly acts on Limbic system and ascending reticular formation in the CNS. It binds to the BZD receptor. The binding will facilitates GABA mediated chloride channel opening and produce hyperpolarisation. This will produce an increase in the concentration of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA and decreases firing rate of neurons. This in turn alters normal functions of the body and produces sedation.

Interactions for Flurazepam

Alcohol and other CNS depressants: Additive CNS depressant effects which continue for several days after cessation of flurazepam therapy.
Oral contraceptives, Disulfiram & Isoniazid: Half-life of flurazepam prolonged resulting in increased pharmocologic and CNS depressent effects.
Rifampicin: Efficacy of flurazepam decreased.
Smoking: Clearance is increased.
Theophyllines: Antagonise effects of flurazepam.
Digoxin: Increased serum level of digoxin and toxicity.
Phenytoin: Increased serum levels of phenytoin.

Adult: 15 - 30 mg at bed time

The drug should be kept at 15 - 30 degree C in a tightly closed container. Protect from light. Keep out of the reach of children.

Effects of Missed Dosage of Flurazepam

Take the missed dose as soon as noticed and if it is the time for next dose then skip the missed dose.

Effects of Overdose of Flurazepam

Give symptomatic treatment and supportive measures. Induce emesis or gastric lavage has to be done. Activated charcoal can be administered to reduce the absorption of the drug. Flumazenil can be given as antagonist. Hypotension can be treated with vasopressors.
