It protects ischaemic myocardium via an ATP sparing action. It possesses negative inotropic effect which causes slowing of the rate of depletion of creatinine phosphate and ATP during ischaemia. This protects the heart against the ischaemic induced decline in the ATP generating and oxygen utilizing capacities of mitochondria.
