Glucose
Glucose is also the source of glucuronic acid, with which many foreign substances and their metabolites come to form excretion products. It probably provides the basic substances required for the formation of hyaluronates and chrondroitin sulphates, the supporting structures of the organism. It can be converted to a pentose essential for the formation of nucleic acid by the cells.
Glucose solutions are used to replace water deficits and should be given when there is no loss of electrolytes. Dehydration usually occurs when the output is not matched with comparable input. Dehydration occurs in coma or dysphagia or in the aged who may not drink water in sufficient amounts.Glucose solutions can be given with bicarbonate, calcium and insulin for the emergency management of hyperkalaemia. They are also given after correction of hyperglycemia, during treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. They must be accompanied by continuing insulin infusion
