Desferrioxamine
Desferrioxamine (3 hydroxy group) binds to ferric iron and preventing entering in to the further chemical reactions and forms water soluble iron complex and easily excreted in the urine and bile. It can also form chelating complex with aluminium and therefore used in the treatment of aluminium overload.
Distribution: It is widely distributed in the body.
Metabolism: Only a very small amount of drug is metabolised by plasma enzymes.
Excretion: Most of the drugs are excreted mainly in urine and 1/3 rd off the drug through faeces

NEONATES: contraindicated
2.Aluminium poisoning
Oral: 5-10 g in 50 - 100 ml water following gastric lavage
PARENTERAL (IM or IV)
Treatment of acute iron poisoning:
In severe cases (in shock): 10 - 15 mg/kg /hour as IV infusion up to a maximum of 80mg / kg in 1 day.
In less severe cases (without shock): 40mg/kg as IM injection every 4 - 12 hours.
Hemochromatosis (IV infusion) 2 g for 12 hours as IV infusion
Aluminium overload (in patients with end stage renal failure and in patient on peritoneal dialysis): 5 mg/kg as slow IV infusion once a week during the last hour of dialysis.
It is usually given by health care professionals.
