About Capreomycin

A polypeptide Antibiotic,A member of the aminoglycoside Antibiotic, Antitubercular Agent.

Mechanism of Action of Capreomycin

Capreomycin enters the bacterial cell and inhibits protein synthesis. It binds to ribosome sub unit and interferes with the formation of initiation complex and in turn inhibits polysome formation. This results in inhibition of protein synthesis.

Absorption: It is well absorbed after parenteral administration. Distribution: It is widely distributed in the .body. Excretion: It is excreted mainly through urine.

Indications for Capreomycin

1.Tuberculosis.

Interactions for Capreomycin

Aminoglycosides: Coadministration may increase the risk of respiratory paralysis and renal dysfunction.
Non-depolarising neuromuscular blocking drugs: Neuromuscular blockade may be enhanced.

Typical Dosage for Capreomycin

Adult :( IM dose): 0.5 - 1 g daily for 2 - 4 months followed by 1g 2 - 3 times weekly.
Maximum dose: 20 mg/kg body weight/day
