NEONATES: use with caution
1.Hypoglycemia
2.Unconscious diabetic
3.Diagnostic tool in altered mental status of unknown etiology
4.Severe hypoglycemia
5.As a source of carbohydrate calories
6.Severe hyperkalemia
7.Dialysis-induced muscle cramps in uraemic patients
8.To promote diuresis.
ADULT:
Severe hypoglycaemia: 20 - 50 ml, repeat if needed
Severe hyperkalemia with ECG changes: 50 ml, repeat in 1 hour if finger stick glucose is less than 100 mg/dl
Dialysis induced muscle cramps: 50 ml and repeat in 5 minutes if there is no response
Acute attacks of porphyria: 40 ml/hour. If no improvement within 2 days alternative therapy should be considered.
CHILDREN below 3 years: 25% solution slow IV over 5 minutes
Severe hypoglycaemia: 0.5 - 1 g/kg/dose. Repeat as required.
Severe hyperkalemia with ECG changes: 0.5 g/kg/dose
Children above 3 years
Severe hypoglycemia: 1 - 2 ml/kg/dose, repeat if needed.
Severe hyperkalemia with ECG changes: 1 ml /kg/dose
NEONATES
Severe hypoglycaemia: loading dose 0.1 - 1.2 g/kg. Maintenance 5 - 7 mg/kg/min
Severe hyperkalemia with ECG changes: 0.5 g/kg/dose
