Mechanism of Action of Ipriflavone
Ipriflavone is a synthetic flavonoid (isoflavone) which promotes incorporation of calcium in to bone. It inhibits bone breakdown, stops bone loss, and improves bone density. Ipriflavone slows down the work of the osteoclasts (bone-eroding cells). This allows the osteoblasts (bone-building cells) to work more effectively. It stimulates osteoblast activity by down-regulation of endothelin receptors. Ipriflavone may also reduce the ability of endothelin-1 to inhibit mineralization. Ipriflavone also inhibits a calcium dependent protease throughout the body.
