Mechanism of Action of Risperidone
Risperidone exerts its antipsychotic activity by blocking Dopamine and Serotonin (5HT2) receptors. The drug has antagonistic action on alpha adrenergic and histaminergic receptors. These produce an increase in neurotransmitters concentration and thereby antipsychotic action.

Absorption: It is well absorbed after oral administration.
Distribution: It is distributed in the body in protein bound form.
Metabolism: Risperidone is extensively metabolised in the liver.
Excretion: Risperidone and its metabolites are excreted primarily in urine. Small amount excreted in faeces.

Interactions for Risperidone
Levodopa : Efficacy of levodopa and dopamine agonists reduced.
Carbamazepine : Chronic administration of carbamazepine may decrease it`s efficacy.
Clozapine : Chronic administration of clozapine may enhance it`s efficacy.
Typical Dosage for Risperidone
Adult: 2 mg / day in 2 divided doses. Dose is increased by 2mg every day up to 6 mg / day.
Maintenance dose: 4 - 6 mg / day in 2 divided doses

Store at 15 - 30 degree C. Protect from heat and light. Keep out of the reach of children.
Effects of Missed Dosage of Risperidone
Take the missed dose as soon as noticed .If it is the time for next dose then skip the missed dose and take the next dose. Do not double the dose. Continue the regular schedule.
Effects of Overdose of Risperidone
Give supportive measures and treatment. Gastric lavage can be done to remove the drug from the body. Absorption of the drug can be reduced by administration of activated charcoal with laxative
