Pyrazolopyrimidine derivative( a nonbenzodiazepine, Sedative-hypnotic.
Mechanism of Action of Zaleplon
Zaleplon is a non benzodiazepine sedative-hypnotic drug. It binds to the benzodiazepine binding site on GABA-A receptors containing the alpha 1 receptor sub unit and alters the GABA mediated chloride channel opening. This is responsible for sedative effect of the drug.

Absorption: It is rapidly absorbed after oral administration.
Distribution: It is distributed in protein bound form (60%).
Metabolism: It is metabolised in the liver to inactive metabolite.
Excretion: It is excreted mainly in urine

Interactions for Zaleplon
Rifampin: It reduces the AUC of zaleplon.
Cimetidine: It increases the Cmax and AUC of zaleplon.
Food: If zaleplon is taken with or immediately after fatty meal its effect on sleep onset may be reduced.

Store at 20 - 25 degree C. Keep out of the reach of children.
Effects of Missed Dosage of Zaleplon
Take the missed dose as soon as noticed and if it is the time for next dose then skip the missed dose. Continue the regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Effects of Overdose of Zaleplon
Give supportive measures and symptomatic treatment. Gastric lavage has to be done to remove the drug.
