Antiparasitic agents, A synthetic derivative of alkaloid emetine(isoquinoline group), Antiprotozoal agent, anti-amoebic.
Mechanism of Action of Dehydroemetine
It is a less toxic synthetic emetine derivative used as antiamoebic drug which acts on trophozoites of Entamoeba histolitica. It has direct lethal effect on trophozoites & in the affected trophozoites degeneration of nucleus and reticulation of cytoplasm takesplace.This leads to arrest of multiplication and eventual phagocytosis
It acts by inhibiting protein synthesis in amoebae by arresting translocation of tRNA-aminoacid complex

Typical Dosage for Dehydroemetine
Oral
Adults: 60 to 100mg once daily for 10 days or 10 to 20 mg 8hourly up to 10 days depending up on the severity of infection.
Injection: 1mg/kg/day in two divided doses intramuscularly up to 10 days
Children: 3mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 10 to15 days

Effects of Missed Dosage of Dehydroemetine
