About Ceftazidime
Third Generation Cephalosporin antibiotic, Parenteral antibiotic.
Mechanism of Action of Ceftazidime
Ceftazidime is a 3rd generation cephalosporin which exerts its bactericidal action against both gram positive & gram negative organisms by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Ceftazidime inhibits transpeptidase & thus prevents cross linking of bacterial cell wall. Transpeptidase & associated proteins constitute various types of specific binding proteins which have affinity for cephalosporins like Ceftazidime.It is more active against pseudomonas.
Pharmacokinets of Ceftazidime
Absorption: Orally not well absorbed & should be given parenterally, Distribution: widely distributed & good CSF penetration, Metabolism: It is not metabolized in the body. Excretion: Excreted mainly through urine & small amount is seen in breast milk.

Contra-indications of Ceftazidime
1.Hypersensitivity to the drug or other cephalosporins
2.Never administer along with chloramphenicol.

Interactions for Ceftazidime
No known interaction.
Typical Dosage for Ceftazidime
Adults: 0.5g to 2gm I.M. or I.V. three times daily.
Children: 30 to 50 mg/kg/day I.M or I.V. three times daily.
Neonates: 30mg/kg I.V. two times daily

Store in a refrigerator at -20 degree celciousss
Effects of Missed Dosage of Ceftazidime
Take the missed dose as soon as noticed and if it is the time to take the next dose then skip the missed dose.
Effects of Overdose of Ceftazidime
Symptoms of over dosage include neuromuscular disorders & some times seizure may get precipitated. Treatment includes removal of drug from the body by dialysis & supportive
